Best Portable Vaporizers of 2016

Posted by Chad Agate on

It’s a new year, and if buying a vaporizer was on your list of resolutions, then you’ve come to the right place! In this video, Max talks about the best portable vaporizers of 2016 (so far) as voted by us! Watch or read down below for a full run down of our hand picked favourites and why we believe they are the number one units to own in the year 2016.

The 5 Best Portable Vaporizers of 2016

5. The Flowermate V5 Pro

Our favourite portable under $200, the Flowermate V5 Pro has high end features in a wallet-friendly package. Featuring digital temperature control, LED readout, a clean ceramic chamber and a glass mouthpiece, the V5 Pro ticks all the boxes of a quality product at an affordable price. The Pro offers precise temperature control, inert materials and a thoughtful pocket-friendly design that allows you to store the glass mouthpiece inside the unit when travelling.

The ceramic element and stainless steel chamber produces clean, great tasting vapour that is surprisingly good quality for a vaporizer in this price range. Though the Pro does produce nice quality vapour, it can be hot and harsh to draw from on higher heat settings due to the short vapour path. However, this is quite standard when it comes to small portables in general.

The V5 Pro is most suited to casual vapers who want to vape around 2-3 sessions a week, and would also make a great portable vaporizer for users who already own a larger home unit and would like a cheap handheld vape to take with them out of the house occasionally. The internal Lithium-Ion battery will provide around 5 10-minute sessions per charge, though this varies widely depending on temperature setting and method of use. Unlike some portables, the Pro cannot be used while charging, though this shouldn’t be an issue for casual use.

Overall, the Flowermate V5 Pro is a simple vaporizer with great user features that is easy to clean and maintain. Without a doubt one of the best units in its price range, the V5 Pro is a win for affordable vaping.

  • Temperature Control: Digital
  • Temperature Range: 40°C – 230°C

4. The Arizer Solo

Another favourite product that we recommend on a daily basis is the iconic Arizer Solo vaporizer. Made in Canada by Arizer, the Solo first hit the shelves in 2011 and has been a cult favourite in the vaporizing community ever since. With an incredibly simple, no-frills design, the Solo doesn’t get caught up in flashy aesthetics and pointless features. It just works.

Built for performance, the Solo has a ceramic heating element with a stainless steel chamber and glass draw stem. Capable of producing great tasting, quality vapour, the Solo is without a doubt one of the best mid-range portable vaporizers on the market. It is incredibly user-friendly, with simple two button operation and a huge range of seven pre-set temperatures to choose from between 50°C and 210°C. The high capacity battery will provide around 5-7 10 minute sessions, but the Solo also accommodates pass-through charging so you can plug in and keep vaping if it runs flat.

All praise aside, the Solo’s design does inhibit portability. If you are someone who wants a small, durable portable that you can fit inside your pocket, the Solo probably isn’t for you.

Unlike the V5 Pro, the Solo is large and able to withstand frequent use. We recommend it for people who use their vaporizer regularly at home but don’t want a large and bulky desktop unit.

For a hands-free home vaping experience, the Solo can do no wrong. Easy to use, high quality performance and a breeze to maintain, the Arizer Solo is an excellent device.

Specs:

  • Temperature Control: 7 pre-set temperatures
  • Temperature Range: 50°C – 210°C  (approximately)
  • Element: Ceramic
  • Auto Shut Off: 12 minutes
  • Warranty: 2 years, battery covered for 12 months
  • High quality vapour
  • Great value for money
  • Durable and reliable
  • Simple analogue operation
  • Can be used while charging

3. The Arizer Air

Released by Arizer in late 2014, the Arizer Air is a more portable version of its older sibling the Solo. Using the same ceramic element and stainless steel herb chamber, the Arizer Air and the Solo are nearly identical in terms of vapour quality and taste. The Air still uses a glass draw stem, albeit a much smaller and more pocket friendly one. Due to the shorter stem, the Air can be slightly hotter to draw from than the Solo but can also be used with the longer Solo stems if desired. It also comes with a belt-clip carry case for added convenience.

The Arizer Air is an analogue vaporizer with 5 pre-set temperature settings as opposed to the Solo’s seven. The Air has a temperature range from 180°C – 210°C that is controlled via incredibly simple button operation with colour coded LED notifications. The Air’s operation is an even more simplified version of the Solo’s already intuitive design.

Where the Arizer Air really shines is in its use of replaceable batteries. The Air runs off a user replaceable Lithium-Ion battery that can be easily swapped out when it runs dead. It charges via an AC adapter, but an external charger is available for the batteries so users can easily carry spares around. The Air can also be used while connected to power, so a dead battery never means you have to stop vaping. Although the Solo’s internal battery can be replaced with a little work, the Air’s bottom screw cap makes the process effortless.

Just as easy to use and maintain as the Solo, the Arizer Air is another stand-out unit for those who want the Solo’s high quality and intuitive design in a smaller, more portable package.

Specs:

  • Temperature Control: 5 pre-set temperatures
  • Temperature Range: 180°C – 210°C  (approximately)
  • Element: Ceramic
  • Auto Shut Off: 10 minutes
  • Warranty: 2 Years
  • Simple one-button operation
  • Pocket friendly size
  • Externally rechargeable batteries
  • Can be used while charging

2. The Pax 2

The Pax 2 is the older sibling of the original Ploom Pax, which is much adored for its tiny size and discrete appearance. We’ll be blunt. Although the original Ploom Pax was an incredibly popular device, it had some fatal design flaws that severely affected the user experience. Safe to say, when the Pax 2 was released we weren’t expecting much.

Thankfully, the Pax 2 seriously blew our expectations out of the water. If you need a unit that’s tiny in size and super discreet, then it really doesn’t get much better than the Pax 2. A more mature and thoughtful design, the Pax 2 improved upon the first in almost every way.

The Pax 2 is 25% smaller and 10% lighter than the original, and has a deeper heating oven designed for more even heating and vaporization. It also incorporates a higher capacity battery and a redesigned magnetic charging dock with a USB power cable. The biggest improvement, however, is the completely redesigned mouthpiece that got rid of the original model’s notoriously fickle spring-loaded mechanism. The new mouthpiece is made of soft silicone and has the power button built in. Users no longer have to remove the mouthpiece to adjust the temperature settings, making the Pax 2 more user friendly and convenient to use.

In regards to vapour quality, the Pax 2 produces surprisingly good vapour for a unit of its size. However, if dense clouds and high volume is what you’re after, then the Pax 2 is not for you. Like most units this small, the Pax 2 heats mostly via conduction and as such will produce vapour that is thinner and hotter than some larger units. On the other hand, the vapour from the Pax 2 is very clean, fragrant and full of flavour.

Overall, the Pax 2 is a sophisticated machine that offers a lot more than meets the eye. Using motion and lip-sensing technology, the Pax 2 anticipates the user and responds to gestures. For example, the Pax 2 will detect when it is sitting idle and initiate battery-saving standby mode. When it is picked up again, the Pax 2 re-engages heat without the user having to do a thing. It also uses lip-sensing technology to detect when the user is taking a draw, and increases heat inside the chamber to mitigate temperature fluctuations caused by airflow.

The Pax 2 is not as high maintenance as the original version but still requires regular maintenance to keep the airflow coming through its narrow vapour path. Due to its size and design, the Pax has always been a vaporizer that clogs up very quickly and will need to be cleaned frequently for maximum performance. However, this is nothing that some Isopropyl alcohol and a few pipe cleaners can’t handle.

Tiny in size, intelligent and with exceptional build quality, the Pax 2 is a seriously impressive device for those who want the ultimate portability and discretion.

Specs:

  • Temperature Control: Pre-set
  • Temperature Range: 180°C – 225°C  (approximately)
  • Element: Thin film Kapton heater flex
  • Auto Shut Off: Motion detected
  • Warranty: 10 Years
  • Lip and motion sensing technology
  • “Party Mode” with hidden games and features
  • Magnetic USB charging dock
  • Four heat settings
  • Anodized aluminium shell
  • Two interchangeable mouthpiece designs

1. The Mighty

From the same company that makes the infamous Volcano, the Mighty is the ultimate portable vaporizer. Released in late 2015, the Mighty is a premium portable vaporizer that produces incredibly high quality vapour. As it stands, the Mighty is the only portable that comes close to the quality of a desktop unit, and even puts some lower end home vaporizers to shame!

The Mighty uses a digital display, similar to the Volcano Digit, that shows both set and actual temperatures controlled by two + and – buttons. It uses Storz & Bickels’ patented aluminum heat exchanger for super efficient vapour extraction and precise heating. Coupled with digital temperature control, the Mighty provides very accurate and stable heating to produce very high quality vapour.

The Mighty’s temperature range runs from 130°C – 230°C and is capable of some seriously impressive vapour even on lower heat settings. The Mighty also features a cooling unit between the heating chamber and mouthpiece that regulates vapour temperature as you draw. This tends to be an issue in other portables with a short vapour path, as vapour doesn’t have time to cool and can result in some harsh hits. Thanks to the cooling unit, draws from the Mighty are always cool and comfortable.

The Mighty is powered by dual Lithium-Ion batteries and can be used while charging. It uses soft vibration alarms to tell you when it’s ready for use and also features an automatic shut off function that conserves battery power. It is large for a portable, measuring around 14cm high and 8cm wide, which is likely too large for those looking for a vaporizer they can put in their pockets. Unlike its little sibling the Crafty, the Mighty can be used while connected to power on completely flat batteries, so you can still continue your session if it runs flat. One full charge should provide approximately 90 minutes of continuous use.

Maintenance wise, the Mighty is not quite as easy to clean as the Arizer portables but also nowhere near as high maintenance as the Pax. All in all, it is a pleasure to use in every aspect and is the current reigning King of the portable world.

Specs:

  • Temperature Control: Digital
  • Temperature Range: 130°C – 230°C  (approximately)
  • Element: Aluminium heat exchanger
  • Auto Shut Off: 2 minutes
  • Warranty: 2 Years
  • Closest in performance to a home unit (and even puts some lower end home units to shame!)
  • Mixed convection/conduction heating
  • Cooling unit that prevents hot or harsh vapour hits
  • Digital readout shows set and actual temperatures
  • Vibration alert
  • Automatic shut off
  • Super precise digital temperature control
  • Can be used while charging
