Botanical Name: Lavendula angustifolia
Plant Part: Dried Flowers
Status: Trade
Place of Origin: France
The most popular of all aromatic herbs, lavender is considered the 'queen of herbs' and the year 1999 was named the 'year of lavender'. Lavender has been cultivated and used for centuries. Reaching back through history the uses include perfumes and incenses of the Egyptians, offerings to the gods of Greek and Romans, deodorants of the Middle Ages to the multitudes of today's uses.
True lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is considered the most effective. Per plant it yields less of a better quality oil. Other plant species which have taken over about 90 percent of commercial production, yield more of a lesser quality oil which contain more camphor. This could explain why it seems preferred for so many uses from PMS to depression and sleep disorders. The oil has so many uses it is used externally in bath and beauty products, sleep and depression pillows and aromatherapy products, it can be found in flower essence blends were spiritual or grounding effects are needed. Its good for blends for those who are high strung, sensitive, restless and need to find a peace within our selves. Lavender is also used in cooking.
